BACKLOT—BACK LOOP
REDEFINING THE CIVIC SPACES FOR DOWNTOWN LINCOLN
Lincoln, Nebraska Fall 2020
WHAT IS THE BACKLOT—BACK LOOP ?
The BACKLOT—BACK LOOP asks how can downtown Lincoln adapt to the changes of COVID-19 and beyond?
What could we create in the city that would be missed if it was no longer in Lincoln? What exciting futures are there for our city and the built environment?
COLLABORATIVE PROJECTS
This website provides a collection of the projects + proposals that arose out of the necessity of rethinking artistic and cultural systems of production within the context of environmental systems in Lincoln, Nebraska during the Fall of 2021.
Project work shown here includes analysis of abandoned urban spaces, systems, and adaptation of material surplus that results from a change in patterns and movements around the city due to COVID-19.
These projects provide initial ideas that will be refined over the Spring 2021 semester. Over this stage we will simplify 2-3 proposal to resolve budget, construction and schedule in collaboration with the City of Lincoln and community stakeholders.
INSPIRATION
Our aim is to emulate existing projects that have successfully adapted urban spaces to address COVID 19.
Projects like Domino Park North Brooklyn that establishes a comfortable balance of park-to-person ratio in the city
Or the Kasvattamo Greenhouse in Finland
Or The Porch project on Georgia Avenue and Market Street, Chattanooga TN
WHO WE ARE
This is a joint venture set up between UNL’s College of Architecture, The Johnny Carson Center for Emerging Media Arts, and various community stakeholders with Lincoln. NEXT STEPS
The role of place is an important starting point to build the civic imagination—to consider how cities and technology shape us and how we, in turn, shape them for future generations.
We would like to move from the design phase to the build phase and need your support to get there.
We believe this goes beyond Covid-19.
How could you help: Access to a Site, Materials, In-kind Donations, Financial Support, City and Zoning support.
